FETCHLY AND THE CASE FOR FREE TOOLS
Published 2026-10-21 · STARFORD DEV
Fetchly started with a simple frustration: download managers that nag you to pay, or bury a basic tool under upsells. Downloading a file in pieces is not a premium feature — so Fetchly is free forever, no paywall.
Under the hood it is serious engineering: segmented downloads across up to 32 connections, pause and resume that survive restarts, a queue, categories, torrent support, a browser extension and a proper download history in SQLite.
It also taught me restraint. I redesigned the interface three times in a day before accepting the verdict: the original dashboard was the right one. Free tools still deserve that level of care — maybe especially free tools.
